Summary:

Artificial Insemination (AI) in rabbits, colony management, dates from the late 80’s, just over 20 years. Although in certain matters it could use the knowledge acquired in other species where artificial insemination was used long before, in other cases it was necessary to carry out various studies to solve problems unique to rabbits. This review outlines the evolution and current status of AI in the rabbits in each of different steps of this technique: collection, evaluation, dilution and storage of semen, induction of estrus, insemination and induction of ovulation. The conclusion to be drawn from this review is that in a few years scientific advances in rabbit was enormous, being able now to obtain high fertility and prolificacy in cycles of 42 days, using semen refrigerated storage times 48 hours, allowing the development of male insemination centers dedicated to the production of semen doses that serve them long distances.
