The present article offers a review of the impact that the new molecular techniques have had, and are having, in the field of genetic evaluation and improvement of livestock. Three clearly differentiated components are being discussed including the prediction of breeding value, the identification of differential expression at the level of the RNA, and the uses that proteomics techniques have revealed. The article finishes with the presentation, open for discussion, of a series of practical suggestions.
