Peach industry and breeding in United States

Summary:

United States has been pioneer in developing peach breeding programs. Contributions in enlarging the list of cultivars are dated in eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Modern peach breeding was initiated in the early decades of the twentieth century. Since then, more than 20 eminent public and private breeding programs have produced nearly 90% of the leader cultivars grown in the world. This paper includes some characteristics of the peach industry in USA, basically production by State and main varieties grown along with main public and private breeding programs.
