Summary:

Review about breeding programs in meat rabbits. Objectives of selection, genetic parameters and response of reproductive and growth traits were described. A three‑line crossbreeding system is widely used by commercial rabbit producers. Two maternal lines selected by litter size are crossed to get the advantage of heterosis. These crossbred does are mated with males of a third line selected for growth rate. Dams have good reproduction ability and their offspring have a high growth rate, transmitted by the sire line. Artificial insemination is a good way to improve the diffusion of genetic progress. Also, strategies to avoid increase of in breeding in nucleus farms, and the most recent criteria and objectives of selection were described.
