Structural characteristics of Ripollesa sheep farms in Catalonia

Summary:

This work shows the results of a survey from the owners of Ripollesa sheep farms in Catalonia. These flocks have a semintensive explotation. Flock herd average is 373 ewes with a proportion of 40.4 ewes/ram. The average replacement rate is 17.3% and it is made with their own young ewes. Males are commonly replaced with others bought outside the farm.
All farms surveyed have a stable territorial base. The average of overall farm size is 248 ha. More than 75% of the farm have a forested area. The average of agricultural area is 51 ha and labour area is 42 ha. This one is used for cereal and forages cultivation.
Labour used per farms is 1,9 AWU in average. All explotations studied are family farms, but hired workers are common. Owner works full time in most farm.
Buildings are diversified with investments in 77% of the farms during last 25 years. There is a positive relationship between investment and cultivated farm land surface.
The mating systems is continous and free in 70% of farms. The rest of them have a discontinuous and free mating system.
